For me it was back in late 2012 via Youtube. For some reason I was on a video binge that was "comedy" and "Japanese" related and eventually a Haromoni Academy English segment popped up as a suggestion. (Refrigeeta!!!) Curious, I watched it, not knowing anything about Hello! Project or even J-Pop. *cue audience gasp*
I did research from that point and eventually I was able to piece together everything. At the beginning though I was mega confused with the many uses of the words "hello" and "morning" (Hello! Project, Hello! Morning, Morning Musume...you get the picture). It took me a while before I could remember which was the name of the group and which the name of the show. Haha.
And as I said this brought me into the overall world of J-Pop and "idols". Now, I'm a 90s kid. So I'm used to "boy bands" and their standard of having 5 members. And I always thought that was a lot. Entering this scene, as you'd expect, my mind was completely blown! A dozen members or so?! (Let's not even get started on AKB) Even up to this point I'm still trying to comprehend J-Pop. But I think in that regard it just means that there's possibly a bit of something for everyone.
I'm interested in hearing how others have come to enter the world of Hello! Project, or even just J-Pop in general.

Funny enough, I think I found out about Morning Musume/Hello Project the EXACT same way you did LOL. My first exposure was the Haromoni Academy English Lesson, but then Ayaka's Surprise English Lessons was in the related section and I clicked on one of Abe Natsumi's segments. then I completely binge watched all of them on moebuiz's channel on youtube (by the way, that guy privated all of the ASEL videos very recently...).
Then it brought me into a huge fervor of gathering as much Momusu content as I could over time. And here we are now lol

I first create YouTube account just to make it easier for me to search & listen to my fav anisongs back in 2006.
And 5 years ago I stumbled upon Morning Musume MV ( Onna ni Sachi Are) while searching for my anisongs. I have never really into J-Pop except for anisongs.
Then I looked up for their info in wiki and search for their MV based on the list in wiki. Love them ever since especially OG members.
Then one group leads to another. Berryz Kobo, C-ute etc. Hello! Pro have very vast talent.

as I said in another thread (accidently explained everything there XD) I started learning Japanese in 2009... my first contact was a subbed episode of Hello!Morning with Yossie as the father of a weird family... you probably all know, what I mean... I'm not into J-Pop in general (H!P is not "pop" for me... it's more like mixed genres I like... Reggae, Ska, Rock, Dubstep, Funk, Swing, etc) and I wasn't interested in the girls... but I started to understand japanese humour and the more I learned about the language, the more I was hooked by MM... Yossie and Sayumi made the difference... and Tsunku was the genius I needed to become fan of H!P... the rest is history

I like funny Japanese variety tv shows, it just happened that momusu was in some of them. So it all started from there, I started listening to modern Morning musume during '14 era and move backward. I agree that H!P have better music than AKB or Momoclo, but not all of them. MM'15 singles now not as great as before.
